My recent work investigates themes of isolation, abandonment, and transformation through the use of negative space. I see the negative space in a double sense. In one way, it frames out the subject in a reductive manner and in another respect, the space itself becomes second to the subject.
The paintings examine the loss of the rural life as more Americans abandon the pastoral for an urban existence. With urban sprawl replacing the rural landscape, I've taken images from West Texas, particularly abandoned buildings, and isolated them on monochromatic backgrounds, giving more than a sense of the empty space to the rural landscape but hopefully a true sense of isolation and abandonment.
I see the conventional western countryside fading away, as a new, desolate terrain swallows up the artifacts of deserted small towns. In some sense, I'm dealing with the idea of loneliness and how we as individuals have become more compartmentalized. Although my current body of work examines isolation on an environmental level, my previous work dealt with isolation on a human scale. At the time, I was interested in how, we as humans interact with one another and our relationship with our surroundings.
