Natasha Law

Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present a solo-exhibition of never before seen works by Natasha Law (English, b. 1970) in conjunction with FRIEZE Art Fair.

Natasha Law is known for her graceful high gloss silhouettes composed primarily on aluminum. Her paintings and drawings alike capture the allure of the subject through color, tone, and contrast to elucidate the negative space seen frequently in her portfolio. Law’s portraiture conveys a rich and mannered delicacy while keeping a distinctly contemporary feel in the choice of her medium.

Employing blocks of color and purposeful strokes, Natasha Law’s figurative works capture moments that are unspecific to time. Her figures are often sanguine and casual, but are always full of intention. Taking from private scenes within the home and domestic space, Law intrigues with a level of voyeurism. However, her characters are more often than not faceless. This establishes much-needed distance from overt characterization, but provides subtle implication towards self-identification.

The current exhibition furthers Law’s experimentation with striking silhouettes and negative space. As seen very often throughout her oeuvre, Law avoids overstating her areas, but rather than nudity protracting our attention, Law intelligently crops her figures to emphasize the less obvious details. Set against the stark negativity of her saturated tableaus, Law allows her forms to realize themselves by virtue of tousled locks and slouched shoulders, which themselves offer valuable insight into the psyche of her protagonists. Law received her degree from Camberwell College of Art. She currently lives and works in London.
